Alan James Latta, 73, passed away August 21, 2023, at the University of Kansas Medical Center from complications following heart surgery.

Al was born May 27, 1950, in Manhattan, New York, to the late Albert Mohfanz and Frances Cavasenno. After graduating high school in 1968, he joined the Marine Corps. and was honorably discharged. He found his calling with singing and joined in with The Duprees. He was only with them a short time before he met his good friend Johnny Petillo and went on the road singing with them across the globe. He did that for years.

In 1998, he found his way to Kansas City and met a wonderful guy named Johnny Pisciotta who owned the The Cigar Box, where Al would give him 25 wonderful years. Al was the man – everyone loved him! He had the funniest stories ever and would leave audiences laughing so hard their stomachs hurt. He was one of a kind and packed the Cigar Box every night. It was there that he met the last love of his life and mother of his last child, Darlene Leto, who was a new bartender. They spent five wonderful years together until their split and her move to Las Vegas where Al would come to visit their son Michael.

Al left an indelible mark on everyone he knew. He will be greatly missed, but his legend will live on forever. He was a great man and a fantastic father who loved his son Michael more than life itself.

Al is survived by his son Michael Mohfanz of Las Vegas; his son from a previous marriage Kris Mohfanz of Miami; his sister Barbara Castellano (Lenny) of Pennsylvania; and his stepsister Debbie (Michael) of Ohio.

A celebration of his life will take place beginning at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 30, at The Cigar Box, 1519 Grand Blvd, Kansas City, MO 64108.
