In loving memory of our mother, Anona Joan (nee Spaw) Ishmael, who was born to Anona and Basil Spaw on December 2, 1932.  She was preceded in death by her parents, and two brothers Vernon and Paul. Joan passed away on March 17, 2024.

She is survived by her sister Dorothy Stone, and ten children. She was the devoted mother of Anita Theban, Janet Kassanavoid, Michael Ishmael (Jeri), Phil Ishmael (Antionette), Kenneth Ishmael (Laura) Karen Morley (Robert), Mark Ishmael, Julie Seely, Cindy Gould (Jeff), and Brenda Mozingo.   She was the loving grandmother to thirty and great-grandmother to over 35. Joan will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

Our mother was a kind, caring, and giving person. She was a strong woman who faced every challenge in her life with great courage.  Joan was a source of inspiration to us all, and she will be deeply missed by everyone whose lives she touched. Growing up in Northeast Kansas City, she developed a lasting faith in God at Holy Trinity Grade School and Glennon High.  She was a woman of strong faith, and she instilled in us the importance of family and hard work. Our mother was a truly faithful woman.  As her grandson Brian noted: "No one could dim her light."

Services will be held on Monday, March 25, at St. Mark's Catholic Church. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m. with the Funeral Mass at 12:00 p.m. Burial will follow at Mt. Saint Mary's Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Mark's Church.
