Barbara Mett Shippee-Larson, 91, of Kansas City, Missouri, joined her Father in Heaven on August 25, 2018.
Barbara was born July 22, 1927 to James Mett and Margaret Tarr Shippee. She was a 1945 graduate of North Kansas City High School and attended Park University as well as the Kansas City Art Institute. She loved teaching, art, books, cooking, traveling and collecting antiques. She held many roles in her life including, a firefighter for NKC during WWII , Deputy County Clerk, Deputy County Auditor, and ran Clay County Democratic Headquarters for many years. Barbara was a member of Teamsters Local 856 and was an airline stewardess for Mid-Continent Airlines. She was well traveled throughout the United States and abroad.
Barbara was preceded in death by her father and mother James Mett and Margaret Tarr Shippee; her sisters Joan Shippee Wagner and Helen Shippee Raven; and her husbands Richard Gaarde and Eugene Larson.
Barbara leaves behind her sister Jane Shippee Rhule (Bill); daughters Pamela Gaarde Lipari (John), Kathy Piaz Yoder (Larry); and her son Fredric Gaarde (Gizelle). She also leaves behind four grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
We would like to thank New Mark Care Center, Kansas City Hospice and all the staff for their excellent care and love for Barbara and her family.
At Barbara's request she has donated her body to the University of Kansas for research and learning. A Memorial Open House will be held 1-4 p.m. Sunday, September 9, 2018, at Pam & John Lipari's home, 5636 N. Clinton Place, Kansas City, MO 64119. In lieu of flowers we ask, as family, donations be made to Gordon Parks Elementary School in her memory.
