Carl DiMiceli, 90, passed away August 27, 2023, peacefully at home surrounded by his family.

Carl (Calogero) was born February 28, 1933, to Salvatore DiMiceli and Giuseppa LaLumia in Campofelice di Fitalia, Sicily. He was the youngest of four brothers. As his parents aged, the role of caretaker fell to Carl which resulted in him becoming an excellent cook and that's when he learned to be a barber.

Carl came to the United States in 1958 after marrying Jean (Vincenza) LaLumia in 1957.  He began his work life as many from the old country did working at Roma Bakery. He ultimately found his calling as a barber serving a clientele of mostly downtown Kansas City, MO office workers. He took pride in his old school barbershops with his lovely manicurist and reliable shoeshine man.

For more than 40 years he operated barbershops at various downtown hotels including the Dixon, Continental and Muehlebach hotels. His last barbershop was his favorite - streetside at 11th and Baltimore where he could watch the hustle and bustle of downtown walk by his window as he cut hair.  His traditional spinning barber pole welcomed all who entered. Carl treasured his relationships with his regular clients, and it was those relationships he missed most when he retired in 2007.

Carl loved having his four generations of family close, and there's no better way to keep them close than with food.  He made his pasta con sugo every Sunday, along with Italian sausage, and any number of other meats and sides. Sunday lunch at noon is a mainstay to this day. Once he could no longer cook, his sons took over the cooking and the gatherings continue. Carl will rest happily knowing that the table will always be set, the food will be plentiful, and friends and family alike are always welcome.  Buon Appetito!

Carl also enjoyed working his garden of tomatoes, cucumbers, beans, cucuzza, eggplant and whatever else might interest him in a given year. He enjoyed watching sports, especially in the old days on the front porch in Northeast with his 13-inch black and white TV tuned to Royals games in the heat of summer. Mostly though he just enjoyed having his family and friends around.

Even at 90, as one might expect from a barber, he was proud to still have a full head of dark hair. He insisted on coloring it because he knew a barber's hair should always look good.

Carl was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Giuseppe, Mansueto, and Andrea;  sisters-in-law Marianna, Antonia, Irma and Carmela; brother-in-law Francesco; and many other beloved family members and dear friends.

Carl is survived by his wife Jean; sons Carl (Angie) and Louie (Christi); grandchildren Celina Jones (Learon), Matthew DiMiceli (Ashlee) and Elena Shanley (Luke); great-grandchildren Zaniah, Charlie and Quinton Jones, Ryan and Dani DiMiceli; his much-loved nieces, nephews and many other family and friends in Kansas City and Italy.
