Obituary

Carlo LaBella, 98, passed away March 31, 2021. Visitation will be 10 a.m. with the Funeral Mass at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, April 6, at St. Mark's Catholic Church, Independence, MO. Entombment will follow at Mount Olivet Mausoleum. Masks and social distancing are required for the services.

Carlo was born in Kansas City, MO on March 5, 1923, to the late Joseph and Giovanna (Garbo) LaBella and was raised by his aunt and uncle the late Frances and Charlie Bavetta. He spoke only spoke Italian upon entering school and graduated from Paseo High School. He was a WWII veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps serving in New Guinea and was honorably discharged as a Sergeant. Following the war, he attended Rockhurst College on the GI Bill and earned his associate degree. He married Nancy Marie Gimmarro in 1949. Carlo worked at the traffic court in Kansas City for 13 years before working at Koch Supplies where he retired as credit manager in 1990 after 30 years. Carlo enjoyed sketching, especially horses, and the outdoors. He was active with the St. Joseph Table's at St. Mark's and Holy Cross parishes and received a lifetime achievement award in 2008 for his work at the Derrick Thomas Souper Bowl through the St. Vincent de Paul Society at St. Mark's.

Carlo was preceded in death by his loving wife of 50 years Nancy LaBella in 2000; his son-in-law Tim Walkenhorst; and his siblings Frances Monteleone, and Frank and Joe LaBella. He is survived by his daughter JoAnn Walkenhorst; his grandchildren Katie Barttrum (Wesley) and Chris Walkenhorst; his great-grandchildren Lucy and James Barttrum; brothers-in-law Joe Gimmarro and Paul Gimmarro Jr.; sister-in-law Vesta Gimmarro; and many nieces and nephews.
