It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of David P. Kimminau, age 73, on July 11, 2024. David passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his loving family.

David was born on October 12, 1950, in Washington, MO, to Herbert P. and Mary Lee (Brinkmann) Kimminau. He graduated from St. Francis Borgia High School in 1969, where he excelled in basketball. His talent on the court led him to play at East Central Junior College. In 1974, he graduated from the University of Missouri St. Louis with a degree in Administration of Justice.

After graduation, David worked for Missouri probation and parole for eight years. After one too many dog bites, he decided to pursue a career in law. In 1982, David and his family moved to Kansas City, where he enrolled in law school at the University of Missouri Kansas City. David graduated with honors and began his legal career at Phillips, McElligott, Ewan, & Hall, eventually becoming a partner and specializing in family law for over 30 years. He was highly regarded as a premier guardian ad litem in Jackson County. In 2016, David was appointed to the bench as a family court commissioner in the 16th Judicial Circuit, Division 43. David served with distinction until his retirement in October of 2020.

David met his wife, Lavon, in the halls of St. Francis Borgia High School. They married on November 18, 1972, at St. Ignatius Catholic Church in Concord Hill, MO. Together, they were blessed with three children and six grandchildren. David was thankful for 51 years of love, companionship, parenting, laughing, crying, and living with Lavon. David was known for his sense of humor, intensity, strong work ethic, and wisdom. He had a unique ability to balance firmness and strictness with empathy and compassion. He loved traveling with friends and family, visiting wineries, enjoying live music, reading books, and watching sports. Spending time with his family, friends, and beloved grandsons brought him immense joy. David was also known for his spirited commentary on basketball officiating, Missouri Tiger athletics, and the St. Louis Cardinals and Blues.

David was an active member of Our Lady of the Presentation parish, serving in several ministries. His faith was the cornerstone of his life, providing him with strength and guidance through life's most difficult challenges. After battling prostate cancer in 2023, he received a devastating diagnosis in January 2024. Despite this, David faced his battle with cancer with tremendous courage, accepting God's plan with the resolve to say, "Thy will be done."

David is survived by his wife, Lavon M. Kimminau (Westhoff); his children: Benjamin D. Kimminau and his wife Ann Kimminau (Pavlich) and grandsons Connor B. and Adam J. Kimminau; Nicole M. Evert and Scott Schulze and grandson William D. Evert; and John D. Kimminau and grandsons Maclane R. and Brooks D. Kimminau.  David is also survived by his four brothers and one sister: Tom Kimminau and his wife Lori, Ken Kimminau and his wife Kim, Bill Kimminau and his wife Pam, Jim Kimminau and his wife Lisa, and Mary Jo Welman and her husband Scott, his mother-in-law, Victoria Westhoff as well as the extended Kimminau and Westhoff families. He was preceded in death by his father, Herbert P. Kimminau; mother, Mary Lee Kimminau; father-in-law, Linus Westhoff, and grandson, Quinn J. Kimminau.

A visitation will be held on Friday, July 19th, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. A funeral mass will follow on Saturday, July 20th, at 10:00 a.m. Both services will take place at Our Lady of the Presentation Catholic Church in Lee's Summit, MO. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Catholic Charities of Kansas City/St. Joseph or Our Lady of the Presentation parish in David's memory.

We were all blessed by the presence of David in our lives, he taught us all to be thankful for the gift of another day!
