Obituary

Eugene J. "Gene" Lutgen, 76, of Kansas City, Missouri, passed away suddenly on April 20, 2026

Gene was born to Pete Lutgen and Louise Engelbert on January 6, 1950. He spent his early years on a farm in Tipton, Kansas. The family moved to Beloit, Kansas, in 1953 and Gene spent his formative years working the family farm while attending St. John's grade and high schools, graduating in 1968. He was an outstanding academic student and went on to earn his bachelor's degree in business from the University of Kansas. Following graduation, he began a lifelong career working in accounting for the fertilizer division of Farmland Industries in Kansas City. Gene was an avid fan of Kansas City sports, and especially the KU basketball team. He enjoyed playing cards as well as most games of chance. He was dedicated to his Catholic faith, his parents and siblings, and especially enjoyed spending time with his nieces and nephew.

Gene was preceded in death by his parents, and his sister-in-law Janese Lutgen. He is survived by a brother Steve Lutgen of Grand Junction, Colorado; a sister Audrey Schmitz (Gary) of Kansas City; a nephew Ryan Lutgen (Rebecca) of Greeley, Colorado; nieces Sara Frize (Patrick) of Grand Junction, Colorado and Jessica Mauer of Denver, Colorado; and four great-nephews.
