Hugh Ellsworth Maddox, 100, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 26th, 2024, at McCrite Plaza – Briarcliff, in Kansas City, Missouri. Hugh was born February 3rd, 1924, close to Golden City, Missouri, to Leon E. and Maggie Maddox.

Hugh joined the United States Army during World War II, on February 5th, 1943.  He served, with the 209th Combat Engineers Headquarters Communications Detachment, in the China-Burma-India Theater for 27 months, during the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign,.  For his service, Hugh was awarded 2 Bronze Service Stars.  He was Honorably Discharged on December 1st, 1945.

In 1945 Hugh married Orlean "Judy" Hickman of Golden City.  They lived in the Kansas City area, until they retired to Bella Vista, Arkansas. Hugh and Judy were happily married for 62 years, until Judy's death in 2007.

Hugh was a member of the Amalgamated Lithographers of America and worked in the graphic arts and printing industry for more than 35 years. He started as an Apprentice Process Cameraman and retired in 1984 as Plant Manager.

In addition to his wife Judy, Hugh was preceded in death by his son Joel Maddox in 1999.  Hugh is survived by three daughters and their husbands: Cyndee Manaugh and husband Ron of Arvada, Colorado; Melinda Wright and husband Louie of Kansas City, Missouri; and Suzanne Renegar and husband Jim of the Villages, Florida.  Survivors also include his sister Carolyn Schaberg of Lee's Summit, Missouri; four grandchildren – Cassandra Pauley of Denver, Colorado; Courtney Renegar (partner Nick Kartsoukis) of Seattle, Washington; Morgan Bastian (husband Jason) of Raymore, Missouri; and Taylor Maddox (wife Cerah) of Longview, Washington; four great grandchildren – Olivia Watson, Annabelle Watson, Ellie Bastian and Ryder Bastian; and two nephews – Gharett and Greg Schaberg of Raytown, Missouri.

Hugh also wished to acknowledge his dear friend Betty Curnes, of Neosho, Missouri, and the McCrite Family, McCrite Staff and friends residing at McCrite Plaza, all of whom greatly enriched the last chapter of his life.

The family held a private service.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Ascend Hospice Care.
