Janet Patricia Harrington (Leonard), a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and lifelong educator, passed away on December 3, 2025, at the age of 69. Born in Kansas City, Missouri on July 25, 1956, Janet carried with her the heart of a teacher — caring, good natured, and dedicated — through every stage of her life.

After becoming the first in her family to receive a college degree, Janet devoted herself to elementary education in both the Grandview and North Kansas City School Districts for more than 30 years, shaping the lives of countless students with compassion, creativity, and the belief that every child deserves to feel capable and cared for. Her colleagues remember her as a trusted mentor, a source of calm wisdom, and someone who always brought fun and warmth into the classroom.

Janet found joy in the simple, enduring pleasures of life while camping or spending sunny days at the lake, where family gatherings were filled with laughter and easy conversation. She was always ready for a friendly game, whether cards, board games, or anything that brought people together. She worked hard to always stay in touch with friends, neighbors, and coworkers. And she had a well-known sweet tooth, never turning down a piece of candy to share with her grandchildren from her candy drawer.

Family was at the center of Janet's world. She is survived by her sisters Mary Cunningham and Kathy Butler (husband Robert), her loving husband, Robert Harrington, and her children: Tim and his wife Pan; Megan and her husband Kevin; and Jacob and his wife Nancy. She was the proud grandmother of Evelyn, Emma, Ainsley, and Abby who were the light of her life and who carry forward her spirit of kindness and friendship.

Janet is preceded in death by her parents, William and Mary Leonard, her sister Margaret Camacho, and brothers-in-law Loyd Cunningham and George Camacho. Though she will be deeply missed, her legacy lives on in the students she inspired, the family she cherished, and the many lives touched by her gentle strength.

A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, December 13 from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the American Legion Post 58 in Smithville, MO, where friends and family are invited to gather over provided food and refreshments in remembrance, share stories, and honor the life of a woman who gave so much of herself to others.
