Joseph R. Montoya, 77, passed away peacefully in his sleep in his Kansas City, MO, home on August 24, 2014. Joe was born on April 9, 1937 to Pablo and Lucy.
Joe was diagnosed with prostate cancer in May of 2010. He was in remission for a short time. He went through several methods of treatment and fought very hard, but eventually the cancer spread and he succumbed to it.
He is survived by his children Jimmy Joe, Nick, and Shonna; his wife Lorretta; his grandchildren Derick, Joshua, Ashley, Zachary and Julia; and four great grandchildren. He also leaves behind sisters Lupe, Marie, and Esther; and brothers Henry, Johnny, and Robert; as well as longtime friend and partner in crime Kika Garcia. Towards the end of his battle Mike Mendoza was a daily companion and caregiver. Joe was welcomed home by his loving father, mother, five brothers and one sister. He was also a large influence in his stepchildren and their families' lives.
Joe was an entrepreneur and jack of all trades. He enjoyed car shows, working on cars, visiting family in Omaha, the casino and swap 'n shop. His favorite activity was spending time with his many family members.
Visitation will be 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 29, at Passantino Bros. Funeral Home, 2117 Independence Blvd., Kansas City, MO 64124, where a memorial service will begin at 3 p.m.
