Kurt Alan Rife, born on December 22, 1953, in Hutchinson, Kansas, passed away after a courageous two-year battle with cancer on December 18, 2025.

Kurt later moved to Lawrence, Kansas, when his parents accepted teaching positions at Lawrence High School. He spent most of his childhood near the heart of Lawrence on Vermont Street, where he ruled the neighborhood alongside his brother Joel and best friend, Keith. He was also the proud brother of two sisters, Patricia and Elizabeth, who were always curious about what Kurt was doing—or what music he was playing next. Those early years were filled with fun, adventure, laughter, and the close bonds of family and friends.

Kurt graduated from Lawrence High School and attended The University of Kansas for a short period before illness interrupted his education. After recovering, he accepted a position at a small-town grocery store not far from home—an opportunity that unknowingly became the foundation of a lifelong career in the grocery and sales industry.

After his time working in Kansas, Kurt pursued his passion and took on a traveling sales position, delivering handheld pizzas to small communities throughout Kansas and Missouri. It was during one of these trips to a small town in Missouri that he met the love of his life, Patricia "Patti" Utterback, who soon became his wife. Together, they built a life in her hometown before later moving to Kansas City, Missouri.

After settling in Kansas City, Kurt and Patti welcomed two children, Shannon and Wilson. Life during those years was full and joyful. Kurt formed many friendships and professional opportunities, while Patti stayed home with the children and worked toward her dream of becoming a teacher.

Throughout his career, Kurt held many positions within the same industry, each one expanding his skills, knowledge, and relationships. He began as a sales manager for Schwan's Inc. and Tony's Pizza, then moved into a sales role at SkillPath, where he learned new approaches to selling and staff training. From there, he joined Paris Brothers, a specialty foods distributor—a position he truly loved. Kurt was delighted with their exquisite food items and cheeses and was always eager to share his favorite products with his family. He ultimately finished his career as both a grocery store manager and food distributor. Through these roles, Kurt gained a wealth of knowledge within the food industry, enjoying nearly every position he held and deeply valuing the friendships and acquaintances he made along the way.

Beyond his professional life, Kurt was fully involved in his children's lives. He was their greatest fan in the stands, proudly coached his son's basketball team, and worked hard to provide his family with opportunities, travel, and a healthy, balanced life.

In 2008, Kurt's life changed profoundly when his wife Patti passed away from cancer. Though he continued to work, the passion and joy he once carried were never quite the same. After the passing of his father, Kurt devoted himself to caring for his mother, a role that gave him renewed purpose and meaning. In that chapter of his life, he found comfort and contentment in where life had taken him.

Kurt's mother passed away just four weeks before his own death but having her by his side for nearly his entire life was something he felt deeply blessed by.

Kurt's life was one of love, dedication, resilience, and complexity. Kurt was often described as a U.S. history genius—a walking encyclopedia. He was always filling his mind with information, eager to learn and share what he knew. That curiosity naturally extended into his deep love and knowledge of music, especially good old rock and roll, and he built an extensive collection over the years.

Kurt is survived by his children Shannon Rife (Brad) and Wilson Rife; his siblings Joel Rife (Nancy), Trish Rife (Pat), and Libby Rife (Ed); his granddaughter Emery Brown; his sister-in-law Vicki Roach (Jack); his brothers-in-law Mike Utterback (Reba) and Brian Utterback; many nephews, nieces, and cousins; his aunt Donna; his closest friends, and his fur babies Charlotte and Emily Rife.

Kurt was preceded in death by his parents Max and Wilma Rife; his wife Patricia Sue Utterback-Rife; his father-in-law and mother-in-law Eugene and Nana Utterback; several cousins, aunts, and uncles; and his beloved pets—his dog Hattie, and his cats Petey and Zoey.

Those who knew Kurt will remember him through the music he loved, his sharp sense of humor, and the many stories he could tell.

A celebration of Kurt's life will be held on Saturday, March 21, at Passantino Bros. Funeral Home in Kansas City, Missouri. Visitation will begin at 12:00 p.m. followed by a Memorial Service at 1:00 p.m.
