Last Friday March 26, 2021, my dad told the staff at Providence Place that today was his 'day' and he died before the day ended after a hard-fought two and a half year battle with kidney disease.

For 91 years Leo was a resident of Kansas City, Kansas.  He was a 1948 graduate of Wyandotte High School.  Leo was a Korean War Army veteran working on the railroad in Korea transporting troops and supplies. For his military service Leo earned the Korean Service Medal with two Bronze Service Stars, the United Nations Service Medal and the National Defense Service Medal.

After returning home he worked for the Union Pacific Railroad rising to the position of engineer.  He was a proud member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers holding various positions on the Kansas Legislative Board of the BLE and the Southwestern Convention Meeting.  Leo 'retired' from the railroad in 1996 and in his second career became a trusted investigator and local representative of the St. Louis law firm of Schlichter, Bogard & Denton for which he worked until his death.

Leo was a member of Christ the King Parish in Kansas City, Kansas starting in 1960 where he was a Eucharistic Minister and member of the Knights of Columbus Marian Council 3768.  From 1978 and 1988 he was refreshments chair for the Annual Bishop Ward High School Benefit Auction.  If a Catholic educational organization needed to raise money or get items donated for a benefit, Leo was ready to provide his full support.

Leo is preceded in death by his wife Frances who died in 2012.  He is survived by is son Larry of Dallas, Texas.

The day before he died, Dad told me what arrangements he wanted for his funeral.  When cleaning out his effects from assisted living we found one suit with his State of Kansas Knights of Columbus pin, a pocket square, a freshly dry-cleaned shirt and a tie draped over the suit.  I hope I did a good job Dad.

I would like to thank the staff of The Piper Assisted Living and DaVita Wyandotte West Dialysis who looked after and put up with my dad for the last two and a half years.  Special thanks to the staff at Providence Place who cared for my dad for his last two weeks.  As always, deep gratitude to my family and friends in Kansas City and Dallas for their continued support.

Visitation will be 9:30 a.m. Wednesday March 31 at Christ the King Catholic Church, 3024 N. 53rd St., Kansas City, Kansas, with the Rosary being recited at 10:15 a.m.  The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. with procession to Mount Calvary Cemetery following.
