Obituary

Mary Walsh Green passed away on December 30, 2017, in Kansas City, Missouri, at the age of 75.
Mary was born in South Bend, Indiana, on January 16, 1942, daughter of Thomas and Marjorie Walsh, who preceded her in death.  Mary grew up the eldest of 5 girls in Omaha, Nebraska. There, she attended Duchesne Academy of the Sacred Heart.  Subsequently, she studied English at Saint Mary's College in South Bend, Indiana graduating in 1963. While attending St. Mary's, she met John Michael Green Jr., a Texan who was a student at The University of Notre Dame.  Mary and Michael married on December 28, 1963 and then moved to San Diego where she worked while her husband served in the US Navy. After his service they moved to Texas, living in Beaumont as well as Houston, where they raised their three children. Mary was very intelligent as well as compassionate. She believed strongly in helping others and was active in her community, with many years of service in the Junior Leagues of Houston and Beaumont. She also volunteered extensively with the Houston Independent School District. Mary spearheaded a program through the Junior League, in conjunction with the Houston Museum of Natural Science, where trained volunteers went to Elementary Schools and introduced children to archeology, biology and other sciences via the collection on loan from the Museum. The program is still in existence forty years later. In Beaumont, Texas, Mary worked closely with Some Other Place, an organization started to meet the unfulfilled emergency needs of the impoverished residents of the Beaumont community.
Above everything else, Mary loved her family and her dogs. She was especially delighted by her grandchildren and was dedicated to her husband and their three children. Mary loved reading, romantic comedies and spending quality time with her family and friends. She was also an avid contract bridge player and achieved the rank of Grand Life Master. She was a sweet and kind soul who saw the best in everyone.
Her husband J. Michael Green Jr. preceded her in death. She is survived by their three children, Thomas Michael Green and his wife Karen David-Green of Houston, Dr. Marjorie Catherine Green of Burlingame, California, John Edward Green of Kansas City, Missouri; by her four grandchildren, John Michael Green, III and Thomas Wyatt Green of Houston, and Mary Katherine Green and Gage Wallace Green of Kansas City. She is also survived by her  four sisters, Kathleen Harty of Newport California, Melanie Flannery of Chicago, Colleen Walsh Warin of Omaha and Maureen Walsh Brown of Sun Valley, Idaho.
Special thanks goes to the staff of Bishop Spencer Nursing Home in Kansas City, Mo for their care of Mary.
