Norbert John Schmidt, 90, died peacefully on Thursday, August 11, 2016, surrounded by family. Services will be Monday, August 15, at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, 8812 E. Gregory Blvd., Raytown, MO 64133. Rosary will be prayed at 9 a.m., followed by Visitation until the Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. Interment will follow in Mount Olivet Cemetery. Contributions are suggested to Our Lady of Lourdes Parish or Catholic Community Hospice.

Norbert was born November 25, 1925, in Tipton, MO, to Aloysius and Anna (Fischer) Schmidt. He entered the Air Force after High School, with active duty during WWII, the Korean Conflict, and the Berlin Call-up. He completed undergraduate and graduate education at St. Benedict's and Rockhurst Colleges, starting his teaching and coaching career in Walnut, KS, where he met his wife. He married Helen Marcella Schmidt on March 26, 1951. Known as Coach Schmidt to many friends, colleagues, and former students, he led a very active life committed to family, church, and sports.

His career continued from Walnut High School to Victoria High School in Kansas, then Glennon High School, St. John's Seminary, St. Mary's High School, and the Pleasant Hill School District in Missouri, teaching and coaching a wide variety of sports. Later in life he received many notes from those he taught and coached crediting him with a positive influence on their lives, and he treasured these words of appreciation. Coach was well known for getting to know everyone he encountered with a litany of questions, a habit well developed when he started meeting his daughters' boyfriends. He never stopped asking those questions or following the news and sports, all evidence of his endless appetite for knowing what was going on in the world, even when verbal communication became difficult for him. Norb was known for his strong work ethic, always working extra jobs in sports and recreation to support his family, including many positions with the City of Kansas City, Jackson County, and even time with Walmart after retirement.

Survivors include his siblings, Fr. Ed Schmidt, Mary Magdalene Schmidt, and David Schmidt; his children, Kathleen Hall (Steve), Mickie Waterman, Gregory Schmidt (Debbie), Teresa Flenker, Steve Schmidt (Erin), Mark Schmidt, Mary Anita Schmidt, Becky Miller (Paul), Elisa Howayek; 25 grandchildren, including Anthony Tovar who was raised by Marcella and Norbert from the age of 3; seven great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Marcella; his parents; siblings, Art, Sr. Mary Agnes, Harold, Ruth, Margie, Jimmy; and one grandson, Bernard.
