Salvatore (Sal) George Cilia, 99, of Kansas City, MO, peacefully passed away on Monday, November 6, 2023, at NorthCare Hospice House. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather. Sal's legacy is one marked by love, service, and an unwavering commitment to family and community.

Visitation will be on Wednesday, November 15, 2023, from 11 AM - 1 PM, at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 1357 NE 42nd Terrace, Kansas City, MO 64116, with the Funeral Mass to follow at 1 PM. The burial will be private.

Born on July 23, 1924, in Kansas City, MO, Sal was the youngest child of Angelo and Mariana (Iacono) Cilia. Growing up in Kansas City's Northeast neighborhood, he graduated from Manual High School in 1941 and then in 1942 moved to San Antonio where he embarked on a remarkable 40-year career with Braniff Airlines.

Sal's dedication to his country was evident when, shortly after joining Braniff, he enlisted in the U.S. Army during World War II. Serving as a Radio Chief in the 4th Infantry from 1944 to 1946, Sal was stationed in the Philippines and Japan. His bravery and commitment to duty reflected the values that guided his entire life.

Upon returning from the war, Sal resumed his career with Braniff Airlines here in Kansas City and, in 1949, married his first wife, Ellen Horr. Tragically, Ellen passed away at the age of 29 in 1954. In 1959, Sal found love again and married his beautiful wife Rosemary (Quarrato) Cilia on September 19. Their union was a source of strength and joy, and in 1971, after moving to the Northland area, they made a significant decision to join St. Patrick's Parish—a community they cherished deeply.

After an early retirement from Braniff in 1982, Sal continued to impact lives, working for the North Kansas City School District until his retirement in 1995. Sal and Rosemary enjoyed their retirement years by traveling to visit their three children across the country and creating lasting memories with family and friends at Linden Wood Village.

Sal's talents as a master fix-it guy were surpassed only by his compassionate nature. Known for his willingness to help anyone in need, he touched the lives of many with his generosity and kindness.

Salvatore was preceded in death by his beloved wife, parents, and sister Josephine Elliot, along with his brothers-in-law Leonard Elliott, Marco Filardo, and Michael Quarrato. He is survived by his three children: Mary Ellen Fisher (Dale), JoAnne Duncan (Clint), and Angelo Cilia (Mark Para). Cherished grandchildren include Tracy and Alex Fisher, Katie (Duncan) Turner, and Samantha (Duncan) Criner, along with great-grandchildren Olivia and Jonah Waring, Cooper Criner, and Scottie Jo Turner. Sal is also survived by his sisters-in-law Jacqueline Filardo, Geraldine Quarrato, and Antoinette Quarrato, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

In lieu of flowers, Sal's family suggests making donations to Kansas City Hospice & Palliative Care or contributing to St. Patrick's Church, the parish that held a special place in Sal's heart.

Pallbearers honoring Sal's memory are Alex Fisher, Jonah Waring, Joe Filardo, Carl Filardo, Michael Filardo, John Filardo, Carl Quarrato, Michael Quarrato, Jefferson Davis, Charlie Davis, Joseph Davis, and Jeffrey Wessinger.
