Timothy James Carmody, 70, died in the presence of his family January 18, 2017 in Kansas City, KS. Tim was born May 16, 1946 in Kansas City, MO, the second of four children born to Helen (Bergee) and Thomas Carmody. He grew up in Kansas City, KS and graduated from St. Joseph High School in Shawnee. During his high school years, brainy Tim discovered his leadership and public speaking skills and became a debate champion and Student Council President. Tim later graduated from Rockhurst College in 1968 with a major in History and continued to be a quiet source of historical learning and knowledge throughout his life. From 1968 to 1973 he served in the United States Air Force and attained the rank of Captain while serving in Vietnam.

After leaving the service, Tim attended and graduated from Washburn University Law School in Topeka, KS. As an attorney, he worked for both Wyandotte and Johnson County, KS in addition to his private practice. He also taught evening legal classes at Rockhurst College. In 1981 he received the Service to Mankind Award from the El Centro de Servicios de Hispanos organization for pro bono representation of Cuban refugees imprisoned at Leavenworth Penitentiary. Tim often worked two or three jobs at a time to support his family and shared his gifts of integrity, intelligence, clarity, patience, diligence and humor with his colleagues, students and clients.

From 1991-2001, Tim was elected and served in the Kansas State House of Representatives. He was dedicated to his principles, which did not always line up neatly with either party. Tim believed in meeting the needs of all people while at the same time maintaining fiscal and legal responsibility. He was grateful for the ability to maintain friendships and communication with people with whom he disagreed. During the times the Legislature was in session, Tim commuted daily from Overland Park to Topeka, both to serve his constituents and to take care of his family.

Above all other worldly accomplishments, Tim treasured his family. While a student at Rockhurst College, Tim fell for Mary Ann Saitta, a dark-eyed Italian beauty. They married in 1969 and remained so until his death. Tim and Mary Ann had six children, two daughters followed by four sons. Tim was a patient and active father who made sack lunches to order every morning for each family member. He was an affectionate and proud grandfather as well. His children will treasure his down-to-earth mannerisms and catchphrases, his everyday wisdom, his corny sense of humor, his varied musical tastes, and his unfailing support in hard times. Before his death, Tim calculated the number of diapers, sack lunches, and school or sporting events that he changed, made, and attended during his life. Each numbered in the thousands.

Tim's faith colored and inspired every aspect of his life. He was a founding member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Overland Park, KS and continued to act as a lector, lay leader, and friend to his brothers and sisters of that parish until his death. During his final illness, he repeatedly expressed overwhelming gratitude for the family, friends, and events of his life.

Tim was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Kathleen Carmody Myers, and brother-in-law, Joseph Saitta. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Mary Ann (Saitta) Carmody; two brothers and sister-in-law: Christopher Carmody and Bill and Debbie Carmody; brothers- and sisters-in-law: Art and Dee Good, Carl and Marie Saitta, and Judy Saitta; six children and their spouses: Jennifer Carmody, Karen (Carmody) and Bob Miller, John and Sarah (Buckley) Carmody, Christopher and Colleen (O'Malley) Carmody, Daniel and Jaime (Weygandt) Carmody, and Thomas and Kaitlin (Rooney) Carmody; twelve grandchildren: Annie and Emilie Elmore; Ethan Miller; Johnny, Regina, Kate, Michael, Kiera, Aaron, Clara, Peter, and Macaira Carmody; and many beloved in-laws, cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.

Tim's family would like to thank all of his caregivers from Overland Park Regional Medical Center and The University of Kansas Hospital. Tim appreciated each of you and the compassion you provided him during his short but painfully intense battle with colon cancer.

All services will be held at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, 11300 W. 103 ^rd St., Overland Park, KS 66214. Monday, January 23, Rosary: 4:30 p.m. Visitation: 5-8:30 p.m. Funeral 10 a.m. Tuesday, January 24. Burial at Resurrection Cemetery in Lenexa, KS, immediately following.
