WINONA MAY (MORRISON) CRITES
November 4, 1926 - December 16, 2015
Winona May (Morrison) Crites, 89, passed away Wednesday, December 16, 2015, at Providence Medical Center. Graveside services will be at 2:15 pm on Wednesday, December 23, at Leavenworth National Cemetery, 150 Muncie Rd., Leavenworth, KS 66048. In lieu of flowers, contributions are suggested to the Veterans of Foreign Wars; or the Disabled American Veterans.
Winona was born November 4, 1926 in Selman, Oklahoma. She was the daughter of Damon Morrison and Mabel Ward Morrison and came from a family of six, one of whom was her identical twin. Her mother was widowed at a young age and essentially raised the six children by herself.
The Morrison twins grew up in Woodward, Oklahoma where they became famous, singing for churches and civic groups. After graduating from high school Winona attended Phillips University in Enid Oklahoma. There she met Lee Crites who had recently returned home from service in the Marine Corps.
Lee and Winona were married June 13, 1946 and after a short time she began working as a dental assistant. She continued this career until the duties of caring for two daughters became her primary job. A third daughter was born in Ponca, City where her husband worked for Continental Oil Company.
Despite her domestic duties she continued her lifelong love of music performing in churches and for a period serving as the Choir Director in the First Christian Church in Ponca City, Oklahoma. The family moved frequently from the early 1960s until 1969 when they settled in Kansas City.
Throughout her life she had a deep love for music and was talented in all types of needlework. She was also an accomplished interior decorator, a talent she exercised her entire adult life. She worked as a Real Estate Agent for Hardin-Stockton in Kansas City. Throughout her life her primary concern was for her family, serving them with love and devotion.
She is survived by her husband, Lee Crites; daughters, Robin Crites, Rhonda Newland, and Kit Pittier; grandchildren, Shaun Howard, Olivia Sieczkowski, Collin Pittier, Nathan Crites-Herren, and Daniel Newland; and great grandchildren, James Howard, Zerek Sieczkowski, and Alexander Sieczkowski. She is also survived by her youngest brother, Gordon Morrison.
