Rose, a lifelong parishioner of Holy Rosary Parish who always called the North End her home, passed away, Monday evening, January 29, 2018.

Rose Marie Vigliaturo Guastello, one of twelve children of Italian immigrants, Francesco and Antonia Vigliaturo, was born on June 30, 1922.  She is survived by Carmelo "Chee-Bay" Guastello, her loving husband, partner and best friend for "77.7 years"; and her children, Michael (Frances), Frank (Carol), Paul (Gloria), and daughter Jo Marie; seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; siblings Joe Vigliaturo (Betty), and Carmen Vigliaturo (Virginia).  Preceding her in death are brothers:  Jimmy, Tony, and Sammy Vigliaturo; sisters: Angie Bohannon, Lee Parish, and Congetta Distefano; her great-grandson, Anthony Guastello; and by in-laws, George Guastello and wife Mary Guastello, Joseph Guastello and Marie Guastello.

It is not surprising that she found her "Honey" Carmelo, Chee-Bay, Guastello in high school.  Their love story began a short "77.7 years" ago dancing to the band of Glen Miller. Holy Rosary Church was the site of Marriage, as well as baptisms, first communions, confirmation, funerals, and all major holy days and holidays.

Holy Rosary Parish, an integral part and important extension of Rose's commitment to live for others, has been the recipient of her love and service.  For too many years to count she helped organize, bake and do all the necessary preparation for the annual St. Joseph's Table.  As a Eucharistic Minister, she offered her services to the Holy Rosary people of God.  It is fitting that Rose received the 100-year anniversary Scalabrini Award that recognized her efforts to welcome the immigrants to Kansas City and specifically to the North End.  This award was a concrete expression of Rose's meaningful and rewarding ministry to her people—the people of the North End or, as we know it today, Columbus Park.

"There is always room for one more".  Rose Guastello's words of welcome on numerous occasions.  She opened her "beautiful heart" and home to family, relatives, friends, neighbors, and strangers.  No one could put on a meal of basta, sugo, arancini (rice balls) like Rose.  The aroma wafted through home and neighborhood, inviting all to come to her table.  While the Guastello home was small, extended family and friends crowded in, with always room for one more.  Her heart opened to immigrants and new comers to the neighborhood, especially the Vietnamese community.   North End people became her children and grandchildren.  From her, many learned Italian and American customs, language and cooking skills, and the fine art of extended family.  Words spoken by her 5-year-old great-grandson sum up the feelings of all who know Rose: "Life just won't be the same without our Nani."

Visitation will be 9:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 1 p.m. on Saturday, February 3, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, 911 E. Missouri Ave., Kansas City, MO 64106. Burial will be at Resurrection Cemetery, Kansas City North. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to Mercy Beyond Borders or The Sisters of Mercy.
